Chapter 10 of Strategic Management: Creating Effective Organizational Designs goes into the importance of building an organizational structure that supports strategy and adapts to both internal teams and external partnerships.
Walmart serves as a prime example of this at scale, a true hybrid structure, blending elements of divisional, functional, and matrix models while excelling in managing boundaries, culture, and agility.

The chapter highlights cross-functional integration, Walmart does this its logistics, merchandising, and IT departments which work seamlessly together as shared resources. These teams are facilitated by real-time inventory tracking and coordinated replenishment systems.
When Sam Walton first decided to go into the warehouse store business, with Sam's Club in 1983. They shared organizational DNA, but Sam Walton strategically decided to set up and run as distinct operating divisions. Walmart's Centers focused on scale driving everyday low prices, while Sam's club cultivates a member first , technically forward warehouse model. For example, their procurement teams remain separate to this day. Another example of this hybrid divisional structure is how Walmart manages its Interntional businesses.

Supplier collaboration is another key aspect, with Walmart forming strategic partnerships to optimize packaging, shared purchasing data, which optimizes logistics/distribution costs, and co-create products. For example, their long relationship P&G.
The company's culture, characterized by Saturday Morning Meetings, store-level chants, and open executive communication, reinforces the formal structure and drives consistent execution. Walmart's ability to adapt its organizational structure to disruption is evident in its digital transformation, including the acquisition of Jet.com and the restructuring of store operations for last-mile delivery. Ultimately, Walmart's success lies in its ability to break internal barriers, build strong external partnerships, and use culture to drive alignment, all while maintaining structural agility.
The takeaway from Chapter 10 is that Walmart's flexible federated divisional structure allows overall strategy, capitalizing on scale but also allows for divisions to react quickly and evolve as needed.
